From time to time, delivery semi-trucks park on Dempsey Road, just south of French Ct next to the alley behind the strip mall that houses Stuft Pizza, IBU, and Safari Kid. I've talked to a couple semi-truck drivers when I've happened to see them parked at the spot, letting them know that it’s illegal to park there because Dempsey is too narrow in that section to accommodate a semi-truck along with traffic going north and south on Dempsey. They don't seem to care that they could cause an accident; they just want a quick and easy way to deliver their supplies. (I have personal knowledge of the danger of semi-trucks parking at that point on Dempsey. I was driving northbound when a bicyclist was riding southbound; cars going southbound were swerving into the northbound lane to avoid the bicyclist and the northbound traffic had no place to advance because the semi-truck was taking up most of the northbound lane. I narrowly avoided an accident that day; not sure if other vehicles were as lucky as I was.) In August, when I told a semi-truck driver--he was in a Greco and Sons Italian-food truck--that it was illegal and dangerous to park there, he couldn't care less. He told me to call the police if I cared so much. I didn't call the police but wrote emails to both Greco and Sons and Stuft Pizza (the local restaurant receiving the Italian food supplies). Greco and Sons ignored my email (they have a City of Industry address in California but are headquartered in Illinois; not sure they feel connected to the needs of our community). Given the driver's complete lack of interest in obeying parking rules, I didn't have much hope of getting a reply from Greco and Sons; their driver made it seem like breaking parking laws was just their way of doing business. Stuft Pizza did reply to my email saying simply that they'd inform the vendor. In September, I happened to see another Greco and Son's semi-truck parked in the same spot--Dempsey and the back alley of the strip mall. It also looked like an employee of Stuft Pizza was helping the driver with his deliveries. So much for Stuft Pizza letting their vendor know about illegal parking. I didn't talk to the driver this time but called the police instead. Still, the semi-truck was parked there for over a half hour so I'm not sure the police did anything. I'm wondering if there's someone at the city who regulates local businesses. Is there a way to require Stuft Pizza to designate a place where their vendors can park without breaking the law? Sea Food City has plenty of large delivery trucks that use the space behind their store. Stuft Pizza is next door to Sea Food City; it doesn’t seem like that big of a challenge for them to get their vendors to comply with parking laws. What can the city do to encourage Stuft Pizza to ensure their vendors comply with traffic laws?
