Description

Hello, I would like to request that immediate safety measures be considered at this intersection. Many people, including families with young children and myself, use these crosswalks every day to walk to and from the library. The major concern is with vehicles traveling on Arroyo Dr. When the pedestrian crossing signal is activated and pedestrians have the right of way, vehicles turning left or right onto El Camino Real frequently fail to notice pedestrians in the crosswalk. I have witnessed several close calls where pedestrians have nearly been hit. In most cases, drivers appear to see pedestrians crossing but attempt to turn in front of them or accelerate to beat them through the intersection. On multiple occasions, pedestrians have had to stop and wait in the median on El Camino Real because vehicles would not allow them to safely complete the crossing, even though pedestrians have the right of way. I am also concerned about the traffic pattern since the implementation of the no-turn-on-red restriction at this intersection. Since drivers can no longer turn on red, I have noticed vehicles appearing to accelerate through green lights in an effort to make their turns before the light changes. This creates an additional hazard for pedestrians who are simultaneously crossing. Another significant concern is the vegetation located near the crosswalk. I have provided photographs showing the bushes on the corner. These plants create a substantial blind spot and make it difficult for both drivers and pedestrians to see one another. I strongly request that the vegetation be removed or significantly trimmed to improve visibility at the crossing. It is extremely frightening, and I now feel unsafe every time I cross this intersection with my child. I respectfully request that the traffic signals be reviewed. When the pedestrian crossing signal is active, vehicles should be stopped in all directions and remain stopped until the pedestrian crossing signal ends. This would prevent turning vehicles from conflicting with pedestrians who are legally crossing. Please take this concern seriously. I am very worried that an adult or child is going to be seriously injured if the current situation continues. The number of drivers who either do not see pedestrians or choose to turn despite pedestrians having the right of way makes this intersection feel extremely dangerous. Thank you for taking the time to review this safety concern. I hope appropriate action can be taken before someone is hurt.
