Description

I’m writing to clarify the concerns raised in SeeClickFix request #23145548 regarding the Facing Homelessness bus parked on Summerfield Drive. I have spoken directly with Parking Enforcement, and I was advised that the vehicle is in compliance as long as it is moved at least twice a week. We regularly move it for our Wednesday outreach and other activities, including weekends (normally in the evening hours as we serve dinner). Parking Enforcement has not marked the tires or issued a notice to move the vehicle since I spoke to them weeks ago, and I have continued to follow the guidance provided. The bus was temporarily moved Thursday evening at a neighbor’s request so tree work could be done, then returned Saturday evening. A team member parked it, and I noticed it was positioned closer to the fire hydrant than usual. Once I became aware of that, I moved it back to the location where Parking Enforcement had previously confirmed there was no issue within an hour after he parked it. I have also spoken with neighbors who have no objection to the bus being parked there, including the neighbor closest to its current location. The vehicle is not parked in front of anyone’s home. Facing Homelessness is a legitimate nonprofit, and we do partner with the City of Antioch. However, my concern is not about claiming an exemption—it is about following the parking guidance provided by Parking Enforcement and being treated fairly and consistently. The complaint includes assumptions about the vehicle and its use, as well as personal comments about where I live and how the bus looks. I would appreciate the matter being evaluated based on the actual parking conditions and the guidance already provided by Parking Enforcement, rather than repeated complaints based on personal preference. I am willing to correct an issue if one is identified, and I have already moved the bus to address the concern about its position near the hydrant. We are new to the neighborhood and most of our neighbors have been friendly and welcoming. I had our outreach bus in our old neighborhood for 6 years without a problem. Our neighbors appreciated the work we were doing in the community. By no means do we want to cause problems and appreciate the neighbors who have been so supportive about this issue. We were sure to not park in front of anyone's home and scouted out the area for a month after we moved to be sure we did not take up space from where anyone parked normally. It is unfortunate that the complaints continue although we have not violated any parking laws per my conversation with Parking enforcement, but we will continue to be good neighbors while utilizing the public street to park our vehicle that goes to serve the most vulnerable in our community.
