Description

I'm writing to request that the City evaluate the serious traffic and pedestrian safety concerns along West J Street between 6th and 8th Streets, particularly in the 700 block. Several factors combine to make this stretch of road extremely dangerous for drivers, pedestrians, and neighborhood children. 1. Blind Hills and Narrow Roadway The 700 block has limited visibility due to hills on either side. When vehicles are parked along one or both sides of the street, there is not enough room for two vehicles traveling in opposite directions to safely pass each other. Drivers approaching from opposite directions cannot see one another until they are already on the hill, creating a significant risk of a head-on collision. 2. Excessive Speeding Vehicles frequently travel down this stretch of West J at speeds well above the posted limit. The street is often used as an alternative route to West K and Military, particularly by drivers heading toward 9th Street Park. The combination of speeding, limited visibility, and insufficient space for passing vehicles creates an especially dangerous situation. 3. Neighborhood Children This is a residential neighborhood with many children who play outside, ride bicycles, and cross the street. The traffic conditions described above pose a serious risk to their safety, particularly given how little time drivers may have to react. 4. Pedestrian Pathway Crossing There are two pedestrian pathways on opposite sides of West J Street in the 700 block. Pedestrians traveling between these paths must cross the street at the bottom of a blind hill, where approaching drivers have limited visibility. There is currently no marked crossing to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians I strongly urge the City to conduct a traffic and pedestrian safety assessment of this stretch of West J Street and consider appropriate improvements, including speed humps, a marked pedestrian crossing, parking restrictions to improve visibility, or other traffic-calming measures. I recognize that these improvements require evaluation and resources, but the combination of speeding, blind hills, narrow travel lanes, and pedestrian activity creates an unacceptable safety risk. I am deeply concerned that without intervention, a serious collision or pedestrian injury is inevitable. Thank you for your time and for taking these concerns seriously!
