Description

Poorly Planned Street Closures Blocking Residential Access There is a 500+ unit residential building at the corner of 19th Street and Broadway, housing approximately 1,000 residents. The building’s only garage entrance and exit is located on 19th Street between Franklin and Broadway, yet street closures are repeatedly implemented without adequate consideration for the impact on residents or their ability to access their homes. During First Friday today, immovable barricades were placed in a manner that completely blocked the building’s only garage access. There was no apparent consideration for how residents were expected to enter or exit the property. Community events and necessary street closures are understandable, but it is unacceptable for a closure plan to overlook the impact on a residential building housing approximately 1,000 people—particularly when the street being closed contains the building’s sole vehicle access point. Future closures need to be properly coordinated with building management in advance, with clear communication and a reasonable access plan for residents. The needs of the surrounding residential community must be incorporated into event and street-closure planning rather than addressed only after access has already been blocked. This is a recurring issue and requires a permanent coordination and access solution for future closures affecting 19th Street.
