I am reporting a rapidly growing homeless encampment that has become a serious public safety, fire, and sanitation concern for our residential neighborhood. The situation continues to deteriorate. Individuals are leaving trash, garbage, and debris throughout the area, creating unsanitary conditions. Open fires are being started near residential properties, posing a significant fire risk to nearby homes, vehicles, and residents. Families no longer feel safe allowing their children to play outside or walk through the neighborhood. Residents are increasingly afraid to walk along the street, particularly at night. There have also been hostile and disrespectful confrontations with neighborhood residents, creating fear and tension within the community. This encampment is significantly affecting the safety, cleanliness, and quality of life of the entire block. Residents should not have to live in fear or avoid public spaces in their own neighborhood. We urgently request that the City of Oakland: 1. Conduct an immediate inspection and public safety assessment. 2. Address the open fires and associated fire hazards. 3. Remove accumulated trash and hazardous debris. 4. Coordinate with homeless outreach and appropriate city departments to address the growing encampment. 5. Restore safe access to public streets and sidewalks and take appropriate steps to prevent recurring hazardous conditions. This is an urgent public safety issue, not simply a nuisance complaint. We request prompt intervention, a coordinated response, and a clear timeline for corrective action before someone is seriously injured or a fire causes property damage. Please prioritize this complaint and provide updates regarding the City’s response.
