I am writing to formally report and express serious concern regarding the ongoing deterioration of Truman Avenue in Oakland, California. The street has multiple potholes, significant roadway depressions, and uneven pavement spanning portions of the roadway, creating hazardous conditions for residents, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Multiple reports have already been submitted to Oakland 311 regarding these conditions and have been marked as “acknowledged.” However, despite these repeated reports, no visible repairs or corrective action have been taken to address the problem. Simply acknowledging these complaints without taking meaningful action does not resolve the ongoing safety concerns. Furthermore, Truman Avenue is not included in the City’s current Five-Year Paving Plan, raising additional concerns about when, or if, these deteriorating road conditions will be properly addressed. Residents should not have to wait indefinitely for basic street maintenance simply because their street has not been prioritized for resurfacing. The continued deterioration of the roadway increases the potential for vehicle damage, traffic accidents, and injuries. The depressions in the pavement are particularly concerning because they may indicate underlying roadway or structural issues that require more than temporary pothole patching. I am requesting that the City of Oakland Public Works Department: 1. Conduct a thorough inspection of Truman Avenue to assess the potholes, roadway depressions, and overall pavement condition. 2. Provide an explanation as to why multiple previously acknowledged service requests have not resulted in repairs. 3. Schedule immediate corrective maintenance to address the existing roadway hazards. 4. Evaluate Truman Avenue for permanent pavement repairs or resurfacing, despite its exclusion from the current Five-Year Paving Plan. 5. Provide a written response outlining the proposed corrective actions and an estimated timeline for completion. Acknowledging service requests without performing repairs is not an adequate response to a continuing public safety concern. The City has been repeatedly notified of these hazardous conditions, and continued inaction allows the roadway to deteriorate further. I respectfully request that this matter be escalated to the appropriate Public Works supervisor for review and that meaningful action be taken to address these longstanding issues. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to receiving a response and seeing measurable progress toward repairing Truman Avenue.
