California Penal Code 148.5 / 529 / 550. IT IS A CRIME TO FILE A FALSE POLICE REPORT. This includes making a false report of a crime, using a false name or identity (Penal Code 529 — felony), providing false details, making a false report of theft or damage, or mis-stating the value of items stolen or damaged. Insurance-claim false reports are felony insurance fraud under Penal Code 550. Filing a hoax or joke report is also a false report.
